BRIEF SUMMARY STATEMENT ON MY ACCEPTANCE OF THE 'ARMENIOS' READING FOR THE LAC STONE

Lawrence Keppie, Toger Tomlin and John Drinkwater all agree that procurator provinciae ___ iure gladii MUST contain the proper name of the province. I have gone through over 630 CIL inscriptions and they are right.

We do appear to have here a short-lived special province of Liburnia.

Two possible foundation dates. C. 170 (military reorganization of Dalmatia/Illyricum in the face of Germanic invasion of Italy) or at the time of Plotianus (for the latter see Cristina de Ranieri, La gestione politica di età Commodiana e la parabola di Tigidio Perenne'. Athenaeum 86 1998, 397-417).

The second is not thought credible by any of the scholars I have consulted. Commodus did fortify along the Danube, probably because of the Sarmatians. But troops were withdrawn from across the Danube at the completion of the Marcomannic Wars c. 180.

To date, those who propose the late date for the founding of Liburnia cannot supply a reason for its founding at that time.

It naturally follows that with Liburnia at 170, ARM...S has to be ARMENIOS.

You do not form provinces and erect fortifications to deal with a disaffected legate in Pannonia. You send forces and get rid of him, or arrest/assassinate him.

So... the only threat to Italy big enough for Liburnia iure gladii to be warranted for Castus is the onset of the Marcomannic Wars.

More and more scholars are settling on the early date for the foundation of Liburnia. In fact, only a couple of the "old guard" remain committed to an older one, as well as a handful of modern adherents (Malcor et al).

The best recent study of the existence Liburnia and its foundation c. 170 is
